### Mass

# Definition of Mass

**Mass** refers to the amount of matter in an object.

Our mass remains unchanged, no matter where we go in the universe, but our weight changes, depending on the force of gravity. For example, you would have a much larger weight on Jupiter than on Earth because the force of gravity on Jupiter is much higher.

We usually measure our mass using instruments such as scales that are designed to measure weight. However, these can be callibrated to measure mass as we know the size of the acceleration due to gravity on Earth.

In the Metric System, we measure mass in grams, kilograms and tonnes. Your grandparents used to measure their mass in ounces, pounds, stone, and the mass of elephants in tons.
